RBI Trailblazer Awards
Asia Trailblazer of the Year 2027 (Individual)
This award recognises the individual whose leadership has had the clearest and most meaningful impact on retail banking in Asia Pacific during the assessment period. Judges will consider the significance of the change led, measurable results, influence beyond the nominee's immediate remit and the quality of leadership demonstrated. Seniority alone is not sufficient; the case must show what the individual personally changed and why it matters.
Asia Trailblazer of the Year 2027 (Institution)
The flagship institutional Trailblazer award recognises the bank or financial institution that has produced the most significant step-change in APAC retail banking during the year. This is not simply an all-round 'best bank' award. Judges will look for a bold strategic move, transformation or body of work that materially changed customer outcomes, competitive position or industry practice, backed by evidence of scale, execution and measurable impact.
Institutional Awards
Best Retail Bank – Asia Pacific
The programme's highest all-round banking accolade goes to the institution that has delivered the strongest overall retail-banking performance in Asia Pacific. Judges will assess commercial momentum, customer growth and retention, deposits and lending, product strength, digital engagement, service quality, risk discipline and strategic execution. Unlike the Trailblazer award, this category rewards breadth, consistency and sustained performance across the retail franchise.
Digital Bank of the Year
Recognising the strongest digital-bank proposition in Asia Pacific, this award goes beyond customer acquisition and app design. Judges will assess active usage, primary-account relationships, deposit quality, product depth, lending and credit performance where relevant, customer economics, service, risk controls and progress towards sustainable profitability. Open to licensed digital banks and clearly distinct digital-bank businesses operating in APAC.
Best Retail Bank – Australia
Recognising the strongest all-round retail bank in Australia, with judges assessing deposit and mortgage performance, customer growth, digital and branch service, product value, conduct and customer outcomes, operational efficiency and risk discipline. Entries should demonstrate how the bank has competed in a mature, highly regulated market where funding, housing finance, service quality and trust remain central to the retail relationship.
Best Retail Bank – Bangladesh
Recognising the bank delivering the strongest retail-banking performance in Bangladesh. Judges will consider customer and deposit growth, responsible retail lending, digital adoption, payments, reach beyond major urban centres, service quality and progress in bringing more customers into formal financial services. Scale should be supported by evidence that growth is sustainable and delivering better customer outcomes.
Best Retail Bank – Brunei
Recognising the leading retail bank in Brunei, with assessment focused on customer growth and retention, deposits, lending, digital adoption, service quality, affluent and everyday-banking propositions, innovation and local market relevance. Judges will look for clear evidence of how the institution is deepening relationships and modernising service in a relatively concentrated banking market.
Best Retail Bank – Cambodia
Recognising the strongest retail-banking franchise in Cambodia. Entries should show how the bank has created meaningful differentiation in a market where customers expect both advanced digital service and high-quality relationship support.
Best Retail Bank – India
Recognising the strongest retail bank in India, where scale alone will not determine the result. Best Retail Bank – Japan
Recognising the strongest retail-banking performance in Japan. Customer Experience & Segmentation
Excellence in Data-Driven Customer Engagement
Recognising the strongest use of customer data to make engagement more relevant, timely and effective. Judges will assess segmentation, next-best-action or personalisation capability, responsible use of data, adoption and measurable outcomes such as engagement, conversion, retention, product penetration or customer satisfaction. The entry should show how insight changed the customer experience, not simply describe an analytics platform.
Best Customer Experience Solution
Recognising a bank-led improvement to the end-to-end retail-banking customer experience across multiple journeys or channels, rather than a single product or service touchpoint. Judges will assess how the bank removed friction and improved consistency, accessibility and resolution across the customer relationship, with measurable results in satisfaction, NPS, journey completion, complaints or retention. The entry must demonstrate an integrated customer-experience improvement, not solely an app, contact-centre or AI solution.
Excellence in Mobile / Superapp Experience
Recognising the mobile or superapp experience that has become genuinely central to the customer relationship. Judges will assess usability, breadth of everyday functionality, reliability, personalisation, accessibility, active usage and customer outcomes. Strong entries should demonstrate more than feature volume; they should show that customers use the experience frequently and that it has strengthened engagement or primary-bank behaviour.
Best Cross-Border Payments Innovation
Recognising a retail payments initiative that makes cross-border transfers or payments faster, cheaper, simpler or more transparent for customers. Judges will assess customer reach, corridor coverage, pricing, speed, interoperability, FX transparency, adoption, transaction growth and security. Entries may include regional payment-linkage models, remittances or other cross-border propositions, but must demonstrate a meaningful improvement over the previous customer experience.
Excellence in Client On-Boarding
Recognising the strongest account-opening and onboarding journey for retail customers. Judges will assess speed, completion and conversion rates, identity and KYC design, accessibility, fraud controls, digital straight-through processing and the quality of the first customer experience. Strong entries should show measurable reductions in friction or abandonment while maintaining appropriate compliance and risk standards.
Excellence in Loan Origination Process
Recognising a lending-origination journey that has materially improved speed, decision quality and customer experience. Judges will assess application completion, decision and disbursement times, automation, data use, underwriting integration, approval quality, cost-to-serve and risk outcomes. The strongest entries will demonstrate that faster lending has not come at the expense of responsible credit assessment.
Excellence in Phygital Branch Experience
Recognising the best integration of physical and digital banking to improve branch-based service and relationship building. Judges will assess how technology, appointment or queue management, assisted digital tools, advisory capability and branch design work together, alongside customer adoption, service times, satisfaction and productivity. A cosmetic branch redesign without measurable customer or operating improvement will not be sufficient.
Best Youth & First-Time Banking Proposition
Recognising a retail-banking proposition that effectively serves younger customers or people entering formal banking for the first time. Judges will assess accessibility, adoption, financial capability and sustained engagement.
Excellence in Customer Service & Contact Centre
Recognising measurable improvements in customer service delivered through contact centres, live support or conversational channels. Judges will assess response times, resolution, accessibility, customer satisfaction and effective use of automation where relevant.
Product Advances
Excellence in Real-Time Payments
Recognising the strongest retail-banking use of instant-payment infrastructure. Judges will assess customer adoption, transaction volumes, ease of use, reach, reliability, security and the extent to which the initiative has improved everyday payments or unlocked new use cases. Entries should show how the bank has created customer value on top of the underlying national or regional rails, rather than merely connecting to them.
Best Credit Card Initiative
Recognising a credit-card initiative that has delivered clear customer and commercial value. Judges will assess proposition design, acquisition and activation, spend, engagement, rewards or benefits, digital servicing, credit quality and profitability where appropriate. The winning entry should demonstrate meaningful differentiation in its market rather than relying on headline launch activity or promotional offers alone.
Best Debit Card Initiative
Recognising a debit-card proposition that has strengthened everyday banking and customer engagement. Judges will assess activation and usage, transaction growth, customer experience, digital controls, security, rewards or ecosystem integration and the role of the card in deepening the primary banking relationship. Strong entries should show measurable behaviour change or customer value.
Excellence in Deposit & Savings Products
Recognising a deposit or savings proposition that has improved how customers save while strengthening the bank's funding franchise. Judges will consider customer growth, balances, retention, pricing and value, digital functionality, savings behaviour, segmentation and commercial sustainability. The strongest entries will show more than an attractive rate: they will demonstrate a coherent proposition that builds durable deposit relationships.
Best Mortgage Offering
Recognising the strongest mortgage proposition for retail customers. Judges will assess product design and value, application and approval experience, digital servicing, speed, customer growth, responsible lending, retention and portfolio performance. Entries should demonstrate clear relevance to local housing-market conditions and measurable advantages for customers, not simply volume growth.
Best Consumer Finance Product of the Year
Recognising a standout consumer-finance product such as personal lending, auto finance or another unsecured or secured retail credit proposition. Judges will assess customer need, product design, pricing, acquisition, approval and servicing experience, adoption, portfolio performance and responsible-lending controls. The entry should show why the product is materially better or more relevant than existing alternatives.
Best Remittances Service
Recognising the remittance service that has delivered the strongest combination of reach, value, speed and customer trust. Judges will assess corridor coverage, pricing and FX transparency, transfer speed, digital ease, adoption, transaction growth, reliability and fraud controls. Particular weight will be given to services that improve access or materially reduce friction for customers sending money across borders.
Excellence in Mass Affluent Banking
Recognising the strongest proposition for customers between mainstream retail and traditional private banking. Judges will assess segmentation, relationship model, savings and investment depth, digital experience, lending and protection, customer growth, assets or balances, product penetration and retention. The winning proposition should be genuinely designed for mass-affluent needs rather than a renamed premium current account.
Best Retail Investment & Wealth Proposition
Recognising the retail bank that has most effectively broadened access to investment and wealth products. Judges will assess product range, suitability and advice, digital investment journeys, education, recurring investment or portfolio tools, customer adoption, assets gathered and engagement. Strong entries should demonstrate responsible expansion of wealth participation rather than product distribution alone.
Best Bancassurance / Protection Proposition
Recognising the strongest bank-led insurance or protection proposition for retail customers. Judges will assess customer relevance, product choice, integration into banking journeys, advice or suitability, digital servicing, penetration, persistency and customer outcomes. The winning entry should show that protection is embedded thoughtfully into the relationship rather than treated as a standalone cross-sell exercise.
Best Digital Lending & BNPL Innovation
Recognising a digital-lending or buy-now-pay-later proposition that combines convenience with sound customer and credit outcomes. Judges will assess onboarding and decisioning, data use, speed, transparency, customer adoption, repeat usage, unit economics and credit performance. Responsible lending, affordability and customer protection will carry substantial weight; growth without evidence of risk quality will not be sufficient.
Best SME Lending Initiative
Recognising an SME lending initiative that has expanded suitable access to credit while improving speed, decision quality or customer outcomes. Judges will consider adoption, underwriting discipline and measurable impact on business customers.
Best SME Merchant Acquiring & Payments Solution
Recognising a merchant acceptance or payments proposition that improves how SMEs collect, reconcile or manage payments. Judges will assess uptake, transaction performance, affordability and business outcomes.
Best SME Banking Ecosystem
Recognising a bank-led ecosystem integrating core banking with useful non-banking services for SMEs, such as accounting, commerce or business management. Judges will assess adoption, integration, customer value and outcomes for participating firms.
Next Generation Technology
Best Application of Data Analytics
Recognising a high-impact application of analytics in retail banking. This may span pricing, forecasting, service, risk, operations or customer insight. Judges will assess the quality of the data and models, how analytics was embedded into decisions or workflows, governance and measurable outcomes. The category rewards analytical capability that changes performance, not dashboards or data consolidation on their own.
Best Cloud Transformation Initiative
Recognising a cloud programme that has materially improved the bank's speed, scalability, resilience or cost base. Judges will assess the scope of migration or cloud-native redesign, security and governance, delivery complexity, time-to-market, operational performance and measurable business outcomes. Strong entries should show why cloud changed how the bank operates or innovates, rather than simply naming technology adopted. This is a bank-led transformation award: judges will focus on the bank's strategic decisions, operating-model change and realised business benefits, rather than solely the technology provider's implementation.
Excellence in Core Banking Modernisation
Recognising the strongest modernisation of core retail-banking infrastructure. Judges will assess the strategic problem addressed, migration or architecture approach, delivery discipline, resilience, product-launch speed, interoperability, data availability, operating efficiency and customer impact. Whether the programme is a replacement, progressive renewal or composable transformation, it must demonstrate tangible improvement in the bank's ability to compete and change.
Excellence in Cybersecurity & Resilience
Recognising a retail-banking security and resilience programme that has strengthened protection of customers and critical services. Judges will assess threat prevention and detection, identity and access controls, incident readiness, third-party risk, recovery capability, customer impact and measurable improvements in security or resilience. Strong entries should connect technical controls to trust and continuity of banking services.
Best Digital Identity & Authentication Innovation
Recognising an identity or authentication initiative that has made retail banking more secure without creating unnecessary customer friction. Judges will assess biometric or non-biometric methods, fraud reduction, false positives, login or transaction success, onboarding impact, accessibility, privacy and customer adoption. The strongest entries will show an improved balance between security, trust and ease of use.
Excellence in AI-Driven Customer Experience
Recognising the most effective use of AI to improve customer service, personalisation or engagement. Judges will assess the customer problem addressed, accuracy and quality, integration into journeys, human escalation, governance, adoption and measurable outcomes such as satisfaction, resolution, conversion or engagement. The winning use case should demonstrate better customer outcomes, not simply the presence of generative AI.
Excellence in AI for Risk & Compliance
Recognising a deployed AI capability that materially improves risk, fraud, financial-crime or compliance processes in retail banking. Judges will assess model effectiveness, explainability and governance, false-positive reduction, detection or decision quality, productivity gains and operational outcomes. Strong entries should demonstrate responsible use of AI within a controlled framework and evidence that the technology improves both effectiveness and efficiency.
Excellence in AI-Powered Lending Innovation
Recognising the strongest use of AI in retail-credit underwriting, decisioning, pricing, servicing or portfolio management. Judges will assess data quality, model governance, speed, inclusion or accuracy benefits, approval and conversion, credit performance and customer outcomes. The winning entry should show that AI has improved lending decisions or access in a measurable and responsible way.
Best AI & Intelligent Automation Use Case
Recognising a live retail-banking use case applying generative AI, agentic AI or intelligent automation to solve a defined business problem. Judges will assess evidence of adoption, operational controls, customer or staff outcomes and measurable value.
Third-Party Partnerships
Best Advance in Loyalty/Rewards Programme
Recognising a loyalty or rewards programme that has measurably deepened customer engagement. Judges will assess proposition relevance, partner ecosystem, redemption and active usage, incremental spend or product engagement, retention and customer value. Strong entries should demonstrate behaviour change and relationship impact rather than simply the size of a rewards catalogue.
Best Fintech Partnership
Recognising the most effective collaboration between a retail bank and fintech. Judges will assess the strategic need, fit between partners, speed and quality of execution, integration, customer or operational outcomes, scale and sustainability of the relationship. The strongest entries will show that the partnership delivered a result that neither party could have achieved as effectively alone.
Most Innovative Payments Partnership
Recognising a partnership that has created a materially better retail-payments experience or new payment use case. Judges will assess strategic fit, interoperability, customer reach, transaction adoption, speed, convenience, economics, security and scalability. Partnerships may involve payment networks, fintechs, merchants, wallets or infrastructure providers, but the bank's role and customer impact must be clear.
Best Open Banking & Open Finance Initiative
Recognising a live open banking or open finance initiative using consented data exchange or APIs to deliver measurable value. Judges will assess customer benefit, partnership execution, security and uptake.
Best Broker/financial intermediary program
Recognising a bank-led programme that successfully serves brokers, financial intermediaries or third-party distribution partners. Judges will assess partner experience, governance, origination quality and measurable business results.
Governance & Sustainability
Excellence in Sustainable Retail Finance
Recognising a retail-finance proposition that helps customers make or fund more sustainable choices, such as green mortgages, electric-vehicle finance, energy-efficiency lending or other measurable consumer solutions. Judges will assess product integrity, customer adoption, financing volumes, environmental methodology and outcomes, pricing and commercial sustainability. Corporate-level ESG activity without a clear retail-finance proposition is not sufficient.
Excellence in Customer Protection, Fraud & Scam Prevention
Recognising the strongest bank-led programme to protect retail customers from fraud, scams and financial harm. Judges will assess prevention, detection, customer warnings and interventions, mule-account controls, authentication, case response, education and measurable reduction in losses or incidents. Strong entries should show how the bank has balanced fast digital service with active protection and recovery support.
Social Impact
Excellence in Community Impact
Recognising a sustained bank initiative that has produced measurable benefits for a community the institution serves. Judges will assess the clarity of need, scale and duration, employee or partner involvement, outcomes and evidence of lasting impact. Donations or one-off campaigns will carry less weight than programmes that use the bank's capabilities, reach or expertise to address a defined local challenge.
Excellence in Financial Inclusion
Recognising an initiative that has meaningfully expanded access to useful, affordable and responsible financial services. Judges will assess the target underserved segment, access and onboarding, active usage, affordability, product relevance, financial outcomes and scale. The winning entry should demonstrate that customers are using formal financial services more effectively, not simply that accounts were opened.
Best Agent / Branchless Banking Network
Recognising a bank-led agent or branchless banking network that expands access to essential financial services, particularly in underserved communities. Judges will assess reliability, usage, agent support and verified customer outcomes.
Human Capital
Best in Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives
Recognising a sustained diversity and inclusion programme that has produced measurable change in the workforce or employee experience. Judges will assess objectives, leadership accountability, representation or progression data, inclusion measures, programme depth and outcomes. Strong entries should show structural progress rather than statements of intent or isolated events.
Best Learning & Development Programme
Recognising the learning programme that has most effectively built skills needed for the future of retail banking. Judges will assess strategic relevance, participation, curriculum quality, role-specific capability, completion, application of learning and measurable workforce or business outcomes. Particular value will be placed on programmes supporting areas such as AI, data, digital service, risk and transformation.
